In the hustle and bustle of modern life, the concept of self-care often takes a backseat. However, prioritizing self-care is essential for maintaining physical health, mental well-being, and overall life satisfaction. This blog explores the importance of self-care, its various dimensions, and practical ways to integrate it into your daily routine.

#UnderstandingSelf-Care

Self-care is the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health, well-being, and happiness. It involves recognizing and attending to your own needs, both physically and emotionally. Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity for sustaining a balanced and fulfilling life. Self-care is the first step to take yourself from surviving to thriving. According to Dr. Martin Seligman’s PERMA model, flourishing involves positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and achievement. Self-care activities that align with these elements can promote a flourishing and thriving life.

The Dimensions of Self-Care

#Self-care encompasses various dimensions, each contributing to overall well-being:

1. #PhysicalSelf-Care: 

This involves activities that improve physical health, such as exercise, nutrition, sleep, and regular medical check-ups. Research shows us that physical activity not only increases heart health and fights against cardiovascular disease, it also shows us that regular exercise increases creativity, generates positive emotions, and reduces stress and depression, all in support of brain health.  Proper nutrition fuels our physical activity for maximum efficiency and sleep is essential for both our brain and body to recover, so tomorrow we can do it all over again.  Recent studies are encouraging folks to conduct walking meetings.  The results are correlated to a healthier working population and higher productivity.

2. #EmotionalSelf-Care: This focuses on understanding and managing your emotions, seeking support when needed, and engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation. Positive emotion is the first of the five pillars in the Seligman PERMA model, and a key factor in experiencing growth and sustainability in your own well-being.  Continuing to focus on things that bring you joy will limit the opportunity to allow in things that are emotionally deregulating for you.  It has been said, that which you focus on will become your reality.  Focus on things that bring you joy, and joy will be your reality.

3. #MentalSelf-Care: 

This includes practices that stimulate your mind, such as reading, learning new skills, and engaging in hobbies that challenge your intellect.  Having a growth mindset is akin to going to the gym and lifting weights.  Treat your mind like you would treat your muscles.  Train it for optimal functioning anddiversify the way you exercise it.  This is the ‘E’ in PERMA.  Engage in a book about a topic you are unfamiliar, teach yourself to do something that challenges your fears, take a few minutes of your day and complete the word challenges on your favorite app.  Engagement will grow you well-being.

4. #Social Self-Care: Building and maintaining healthy relationships, setting boundaries, and ensuring quality time with loved ones are key aspects of social self-care. Relationships are represented by the ‘R’ in PERMA. Developing connection between you and others reduces the feelings of isolation, builds a sense of belonging, and can provide purpose or life satisfaction.  While most healthy relations are built over times, supported by trust and authenticity, researcher Jane Dutton talks about High Quality Connections (HQC) from a different perspective.  She states that first moments matter. As the adage goes, you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.  The idea of creating an HQC in the first three minutes of an interaction, whether the relationship is a first-time encounter or if it is a meeting with seasoned colleagues, that first point of contact sets the tone going forward from that moment on. It seems so simple, but we are always in such a rush and in service to productivity, that we don’t stop to nurture the soil that will feed the growth of the interaction/conversation/relationship and produce a better flower. Thank you, Jane, for this metaphor.Maya Angelou famously said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”  Developing a HQCs either personally or professionally is all about how you make someone feel and how they make you feel.

5. #SpiritualSelf-Care: 

This involves activities that nurture your spirit and provide a sense of purpose, such as meditation, prayer, or spending time in nature.  It is important to note that spirituality does not only come from religion.  Spirituality is about connection with a moment, idea, cause, place, or purpose bigger than yourself.  It is connected to the ‘M’ in PERMA, meaning.  Having meaning in our lives fuels our purpose and is often marked as a sacred moment.  Sacred Moments refer to an experience that holds profound personal significance and is imbued with a sense of transcendence, awe, or deep connection. These moments are often characterized by intense positive emotions, a sense of meaning, and an enhanced perception of time. They can occur in various contexts, such as during meaningful interactions, moments of solitude, or while engaging with nature or spirituality.  Dr. Seligman says, “Sacred moments contribute to a person’s sense of meaning and purpose in life. They often lead to reflections on what is truly important, fostering a deeper understanding of one’s values and beliefs.” For those that more inclined to lean on religion, prayer is certainly a great way to connect, while those less inclined may consider meditation.  Even 5 minutes of meditation per day has shown to increase focus and reduce stress.  Music is another vehicle for spiritual connection that can be found in literature as far back as the biblical era.  So take a walk through nature, listen to the sounds, and stop to meditate or say a prayer. Mark the moment in your mind and reflect upon the sanctity of these experiences when you feel that downward spiral.

Practical Self-Care Strategies

1. Create a Routine: Establish a self-care routine that includes activities you enjoy and that promote your well-being.  Habit forming takes time.  Be conscious and intentional about your tasks and “trip over” the routine you are creating.  For an example, if you want to work out every morning, set the alarm on your phone and place it across the room so you must get up to turn it off.  Place your workout close next to your phone.  This will signal your brain it is workout time.

2. #SetBoundaries: 

Learn to say no to activities or commitments that drain your energy and do not align with your priorities. Doing things that are not consistent with your purpose will create negative emotion and resentment, saying no to these activities will allow for more time for the one that create positive emotion.

3. #PracticeMindfulness

Engage in mindfulness practices like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to stay grounded and present. When you learn to be mindful, you will no longer be mind full.  Meditation and controlled breathing will create a pause between stimulus and reaction. This pause will go a long way towards emotional regulation.

4. Nourish Your Body: 

Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and ensure you get enough sleep. Food is the fuel your body uses form you mind and body.  For maximum efficiency, only use take in quality nourishment and avoid an overindulgence in processed foods and alcohol.  The toxins created can effect mood, productivity, and clarity of thought.

5. #Stay Active: 

Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine, whether it’s a brisk walk, a workout session, or a fun sport.  An active body supports an active mind and reduces stress.

6. #ConnectwithOthers : Spend quality time with friends and family, and seek support when needed.  Connection reduces isolation, reducing isolation increase positive emotion.

7. Pursue Hobbies: Engage in activities that you are passionate about and that bring you joy and relaxation.  Increasing feelings of joy reduces feelings of saddness.  The two cannot exist at the same time.

8. Take Breaks: Allow yourself to take breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge.  Set a timer while you are working to remind yourself to take a pause and release the stress.  This pause can be used as a mindfulness break.  You will return to your task with a new energy.

Overcoming Barriers to Self-Care

Despite its importance, self-care is often neglected due to various barriers:

1. #TimeConstraints : 

Busy schedules can make it challenging to find time for self-care. Prioritize self-care by scheduling it into your daily routine. Have an accountability partner that will encourage self-care behaviors.

2. #Guilt : Many people feel guilty about taking time for themselves. Remember that self-care is essential for being the best version of yourself for others.  

3. Lack of Awareness: Sometimes, people are unaware of their own needs. Regular self-reflection can help identify areas where self-care is needed. Do something for yourself every day.
